A Large and Rare Ottoman Tombak Ewer (şerbetlik or bozalık), Turkey, late 18th or early 19th century

A FINE AND RARE GILT-COPPER (TOMBAK) EWER

Ottoman Turkey, late 18th or early 19th century

Dating to the end of reign of Selim III (r.1789-1807) or the beginning of reign of Mahmud II (r. 1808-39), large container şerbetlik or bozalık, of elegant pear form, rising from a flaring foot to a domed lid, the body and lid finely engraved with spiralling bands alternatively decorated with leaf garlands, the lid topped with a flower bud, with fine s-shaped handle, the hinged thumbpiece a later restoration, gilding well preserved overall
